A ball is thrown vertically upwards. Air resistance is negligible. Which is correct about the ball at its highest point?

  1. A

Its velocity and acceleration are both zero.

  2. B

Its velocity is zero and its acceleration is 9.8 m s−29.8 ms−2 downwards.

  3. C

Its velocity is zero and its acceleration is zero.

  4. D

Its velocity is maximum and its acceleration is zero.

The answer is B.

Explanation

Gravity still acts at the highest point, so the acceleration is gg downwards throughout the flight. Only the velocity is momentarily zero.

The cell in the circuit has negligible internal resistance.

A cell of emf 12 V in series with two resistors, R1 of 4.0 ohms and R2 of 6.0 ohms.

What is the potential difference across R2R2?

  1. A

    4.8 V

  2. B

    6.0 V

  3. C

    7.2 V

  4. D

    12 V

The answer is C.

Explanation

The current is I=124.0+6.0=1.2 AI=4.0+6.012=1.2 A, so V2=1.2×6.0=7.2 VV2=1.2×6.0=7.2 V.

A student moves one end of a long horizontal rope up and down, so that a transverse wave travels along the rope. A small ribbon is tied to the rope halfway along its length.

Which describes the motion of the ribbon while the wave passes?

  1. A

It moves along the rope at the speed of the wave.

  2. B

It oscillates vertically about a fixed position.

  3. C

It oscillates horizontally, along the rope, about a fixed position.

  4. D

It oscillates vertically and drifts slowly along the rope in the direction of the wave.

The answer is B.

Explanation

In a transverse wave each part of the medium oscillates perpendicular to the direction in which the wave travels, about its own equilibrium position. The wave transfers energy along the rope, but there is no net displacement of the rope itself. A and D confuse the motion of the wave with the motion of the medium; C describes a longitudinal wave.

Monochromatic light is shone on a metal surface and photoelectrons are emitted. The intensity of the light is doubled while its frequency is kept constant. What happens to the maximum kinetic energy of the photoelectrons and to the photoelectric current?

  1. A

Maximum kinetic energy doubles; current is unchanged.

  2. B

Maximum kinetic energy is unchanged; current doubles.

  3. C

    Both double.

  4. D

    Both are unchanged.

The answer is B.

Explanation

The maximum kinetic energy depends only on frequency: Ek,max⁡=hf−ΦEk,max=hf−Φ. Doubling the intensity doubles the number of photons per second, so twice as many electrons are emitted and the current doubles.
